I've got a defunct, malfunctioning vinyl player. When I put the tonearm on the record, the record won't spin (when it's plugged in). And, we've got TWO copies of Janis Joplin's Pearl, so, I thought, why not screw around with the copy and see what kinda sound you get when you spin it manually at a very high speed and then let it slooooow down on its own. The result is:
a) Janis as a chipmunk.
b) Janis at age 70 - immortal and still on tons of drugs.
c) Janis's son going through puberty
d) Janis drunk - Janis on Ecstasy and Ritalin - Janis drunk, again.

Anyways, take a listen to the soundfile (beware: very fuzzy and you can barely hear the theme at all!) and comment. This is solely to entertain you (or scare you...teehee).

The song is supposed to be "Mercedes Benz"! The lyrics covered:
...lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town?
I'm counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and...

I'm putting this in the Water Cooler because it has to do with record players/defunct technology and what can be achieved with them! A mod can move it if they want...

Ten bucks says that is Torrino playing a mean trick on us. Nice try, man. We all know it's you.

At one point, it sounds like Cartman from South Park singing. Man, that's going to give me nightmares tonight. Thanks, Torrino.

What...do I have to take a frickin' picture of my computer (with the mini a/v switch as proof of how it transferred), my hand, and my turntable?

And this is what I get for providing you with a reincarnated Janis Joplin...at age 75.

Sell it with a grilled cheese sandwich on eBay. Now there's a Get Rich Quick scheme.

You know,,you can pull the platter off the turntable. If its a belt drive turntable there are numerous places on the net to find belts, most cost under $20. Its an easy fix.

The belt is still there. I think, somehow, it fell outta place and I don't have the patience to examine it closely to see, logically, how it would go. But, alas, it's old and it's a very cheap system.

Erm...

what are you talking about?

Send me a PM. It could have to do with the problem in the movies section (the # of threads is staying steady now, but a large amount of threads no longer appear in the number, impying that they've been deleted, possibly).

Well,,over time the belts dry rot or stretch, it may still work to a point but wont keep the speed. Its just one of those things that if you have a lot of albums, you might want to replace. It is an extremely easy fix. The plater literally lifts off to expose the drive system. You cant miss it, the belt should rap around a drive spindle and the lower platter. It'll take all of two minutes to check. Its up to you...

Well...it's my parents. But, anyways.

What's the plater and the drive system.

And, to check, the belt IS the elongated rubber-band like thing, right? ;)

Well if its you parents, I'd ask them if it was ok to fix it. The platter is what the record sits on. There may be a rubber mat on it as well. The platter should just lift strait off. If not, there may be a hole in the plater to see the inner workings. It may have to be lined up to a particular point when spun. Then it should lift off. The drive system will look like a minature thread spindle the band just wraps around it, and then a large circular disk under the platter. Might sound complicated but when you look you'll see it really isnt.

In that case, it isn't working. I've tried taking the band and spinning it around there...

Where have you been? My sister and I laughed our kidneys out doing this 20 years ago. If you think Janis Joplin is funny, you should have heard Englebert Humperdink.

See if you can spot the problem and whether it has to do with the belt or something else. Sorry about the picture...

Yeah, it's very dusty. ;)
