 Re: The Tech thread
What'd you have before the Droid? Does it's lack of native multi-touch support bother you as much as it would me?

 Re: The Tech thread
i had a Sony Ericsson W580i.
No, the lack of multi-touch doesn't bother me. People have commented that you can't zoom in the same way you do on the iPhone, but i guess it just doesn't matter for me.

The multi-touch is stupid anyway.

 Re: The Tech thread
The funny thing is the Droid supports multi-touch because Android does ... the makers just decided to leave it out of their apps. 3rd party apps can still use multi-touch on the Droid. Makes no sense.

 Re: The Tech thread
Question: Have a Blu ray player which came with 1 HDMI cable. Have a Dolby Prologic Surround Sound receiver. I've heard that just connecting the HDMI cable to the HDTV (which itself is connected to the Surround Sound system) isn't enough to get the best sound possible since the receiver is just old enough to not recognize the TrueHD sound on Blu ray. Knowing this, how do I connect it to get the best sound with the available equipment?

 Re: The Tech thread
from WSJ: google is making its own phone and will be selling directly to the public, without a wireless carrier partner. The phone is to be called Nexus One. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... mg=com-wsjI love the Droid, so it will be interesting to see what Google will come up with with 100% control over the hardware.

If there was a masturbating smiley, I would use it. HTC phones are masterful, and I can not wait.

 Re: The Tech thread
Google Phone has leaked, if you will. It was given to all Google employees a few days ago, apparently they are to use it as a testing environment for Android and it's new applications. Google has acknowledged its existence, but said it's not for market (something noone believes).

 Re: The Tech thread
I was a Sprint user who switched to the iphone and ATT last november because I simply wanted the technology. The phone is just a fantastic device imo and even though 3G service was not very consistent those first few months it has gotten much better and more stable. Right now, I'm happy my service even though I do think unlimited messaging should be included. So I'm reading this article about ATT woes and how it's image has taken a beating that past couple years due to heavy traffic on it's network in places like NYC and San Fran. I was liking was reading how they continue to improve their 3G coverage and network capacity until I read this: Quote: PRTM's Hays applauded the Wi-Fi solution and AT&T's dedication to improving its network, calling them "critical levers in addressing AT&T's network performance issues." He expects AT&T to go even further, perhaps by integrating tiered data plans that would force iPhone users to pay for the data they download. Tiered data plans? I already pay 30$ unlimited. I can't imaging having to deal or even think about a cap. That's one thing that would make me say "forget it" if that ever came to pass.

 Re: The Tech thread
Wouldn't worry too much about it, ATT has denied it consistently.

 Re: The Tech thread
Not that this hasn't been rumored before, but WSJ is reporting the following (I'm assuming it's official, and more details are to follow): Quote: Apple plans to unveil a new multimedia tablet device later this month, but doesn't plan on shipping the product until March. While the shipping time hasn't been finalized and could change, people briefed on the matter said the new tablet device will come with a 10- to 11-inch touch screen.

Very interested to see the specs and concept of this thing ... it's the only device capable of stopping Google's upcoming netbook from widespread domination.

 Re: The Tech thread
Netbooks are Over-Rated.
I read how the sales of those crap devices have dropped down now that real notebooks are dropping to prices close to those junk things.

 Re: The Tech thread
In general, I totally agree. But Google's netbook is the real deal. It's a netbook with the size and performance of a laptop. It's not going to be anyone's primary computer, but let's be honest, we're getting to the point where lots of people have more than one computer.
The age of connectivity will dawn in our lifetime, and netbooks will be a central tenant going forward. The more connection points a person has, the more important it is that their online existence be available regardless of where they access the internet from. That's where the cloud comes in, soon we'll all be in it.

 Re: The Tech thread
I played around with the Nexus One last week (a friend of a friend works at Google, so he had one). It wasn't much different from the Droid, except it didn't have a physical keyboard, so was lighter. Nothing earth-shattering at this point.

 Re: The Tech thread
From what I've heard, the Nexus One is a lot more polished than the Droid ... live wallpapers, no keyboard (something I'm on board with; i hate physical keyboards), much faster, better screen, etc.

Physical keyboard - that's just a matter of preference, it doesn't make one phone more polished than the other. 2. Much faster? WTF? The droid is very fast - there's never an issue with speed. 3. Better Screen? As far as I can tell they have exactly the same screen specs. 4. Etc. what? Here's what the Droid has going for it: It's on he Verizon network, which is far better than T-Mobile and it comes with 16GB of memory as opposed to 4GB on the Nexus One.

 Re: The Tech thread
I just heard that it's coming to Verizon, and yeah, that is HUGE.
As to the points above:
1. Physical keyboard - very much a matter of preference. Where it becomes more polished is in how well it recognizes what keys you are trying to push, something the Nexus One and it's superior processor excel at. 2. Much Faster - It will have a 1GHz processor, compared to Droids 550MHz, and considering background applications and 3d capabilities, this will be noticeable. 3. Better Screen - Droid has a great screen, Nexus One's is even better. Same resolution, but better colors, crisper, etc.
There are more things, and the only noticeable downside is the lack of multitouch support in native aps.

 Re: The Tech thread
Multitouch won't be supported in native apps, unless Google changes its stance on patents. Get over it already. If you want it, you can download the Dolphin browser and other replacement apps that support it.
I still don't understand the speed issue. I understand that Nexus One has a faster processor, but I have never had an issue with the phone's speed with the Droid, even with god knows how many apps running at the same time. The reason for this is that when an app is in the background it barely uses any system resources. Maybe this could be a valid point if Android had any good games for it, but for now it's just not something that matters.
"Same resolution, but better colors, crisper, etc." - how do you know this? If it's got the same resolution, why would there be a difference in how the colors are displayed? What's different about Nexus One here?
