My best helping advice is for you to watch Whiplash, Nightcrawler and Birdman ASAP. Otherwise of course Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Tilda Swinton, Emily Blunt (Edge), Chris O'Dowd (Calvary)...

Re: 11th Annual WOKJ Motion Picture Awards FYC Thread
I hear what you are saying, but I just have a certain ideological allergy to nominating well-established stars in this particular category. For example, Gone Girl's gargantuan success will obviously have a profound impact on Rosamund Pike's career, but I know her and her talent too well from Pride & Prejudice, Barney's Version, and other films. So it seems more a big step than a breakthrough.

To be fair, Pike has actually been nominated by some established critics group as breakthrough, but I thought it was very very silly.

Re: 11th Annual WOKJ Motion Picture Awards FYC Thread
But a lot of people don't know who Pike is, or didn't anyway. They do now. And this is easily her breakthrough performance. Breakthrough can mean different things. It's whatever it means to you. If you don't want to nominate someone just because they've been around before that's fine. But if someone gives a breakthrough performance, something more impressive than anything they've done so far, then I think they should qualify as breakthrough.

Pike had significant roles in many films, including Die Another Day, Pride & Prejudice '05, An Education, and Jack Reacher. But I hear what you are saying and am not interested in continuing the debate.

Rosamund Pike has been around since 2002. That's twelve fucking years! Maybe David should campaign for Timothy Spall's breakthrough performance in Mr. Turner.

 Re:
Algren wrote: BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR, Miles Teller Oh, how is this breakthrough then? He's been in quite a few movies. It's certainly not his most successful film financially. He's also not getting nominated for awards for it. What's your reasoning for this? I mean, I think it could be breakthrough going by my definition of the category. But yours wouldn't allow it. Divergent is the biggest film he's in. Maybe we should nominate him for Breakthrough for that? He was even already nominated for a KJ award for Best Supporting Actor for the film Rabbit Hole.

This is by far her biggest role and her best performance. I've always liked her but she blew me away here. Most of her other performances are all smaller roles. An Education, Die Another Day, Pride & Prejudice, etc... Gone Girl is her breakthrough into the mainstream and her ticket to being a household name on the A-list. She was mostly a nobody before this. Doesn't matter that she's been working for 12 years. This is, without question, her breakthrough.
