Honestly, what are a few Nazi references among friends? But your strange blend of animal abuse and sexuality is unsettling, sir.

Let's both of you keep this discussion on track and civil. Sometimes in life we disagree, accept it, respect that right, and move on; you're both entitled to your differing opinions.

Re: Merciless bullying of 68-year-old bus monitor
And it's, I repeat, not much money in any grand scheme. Yes, it will change this woman's life, but it's a minute fraction of the money donated to and spent on, say, African relief.
Our dear West German friend casts this slight aspersion when he says, "White Americans provide...much better points of identification than people in third world countries" (BURN!), when, in fact, many Americans, and indeed the United States of America as a nation, donate a great deal to Third World growth and relief. (Next up, of course: the withering accusation there are too many strings attached in many cases.)

Re: Merciless bullying of 68-year-old bus monitor
What a disgusting video. I wasn't going to watch it, but I wanted to know the full story before commenting.
I think Libs said young people/kids are becoming more rude, disrespectful, and it's absolutely true. Of course it's not the whole generation, but it's definitely a problem. And parents just aren't being parents anymore, also. I see it everyday. The defense that they're kids, they'll do stuff like this, etc., has long since become meaningless. Can you imagine these kids as parents themselves in 15, 20 years (or god forbid earlier)? Jesus.
And I heard that the school board is looking into it, hahahahaha. We all know they'll do nothing about it, so let this poor lady receive as much in donations as possible. At least some people out there are doing something. She's 68 years old, earns $15,000 a year, and likely can't afford to retire anytime soon. She doesn't get paid enough to put up with disrespectful brats like that. The money she's receiving will help her out so much, and allow her to spend her last years with her grandchildren.

Re: Merciless bullying of 68-year-old bus monitor
Was there any implication that the woman's life was THAT bad prior to the verbal assault or that the verbal assault changed her life in the negative direction that much that she needed her entire life changed thanks to a fundraiser.
Sure, she isn't rich, but millions are in the same situation as her The bullying didn't exactly make things better OR worse for her in life. I am sure hundreds of people out there right now would willingly let themselves being bullied on a bus if they can get a chance to receive this kind of money.
But yes, of course, as usual people just let themselves being guided by primary emotions - Poor woman ==> gets money to feel better ==> good. Whereas the actual issue, that of the fact that this whole thing happened at all, is arely adressed.
I rest my case because no amount of reasoning will go up against sheer pity and desire for making amends.

Quote: and allow her to spend her last years with her grandchildren. She's 68, she's not about to die. She still has so much life to live. Good for her getting that 500k (if she gets it, it does sound too good to be true) and a paid holiday for 9 to Disney (the airline is only in it for the free CNN promo though obviously). It's ridiculous but in the sense that it's just hard to believe someone could get people to donate 500k to a woman because of a video that went viral...I kind of suspect someone will try to fake themselves in some horrible situation to get donations now.

Obviously my reasoning is solely explainable by the fact that I am German, right?

What is this insanity? What are these strange feelings? So with every post, you seem more and more the clichéd cold Kraut, honestly. Though I s'pose it was an error on my part to bring in any references to the proud recent history of the German people--a weirdly petty digression, I admit--since it's distracted from your hilarious and telling (IMO) pivot from being this pious figure chastising stupid, reactionary Americans for not sending their money to Somalia (fast, fast, name five more African countries in peril) to being this hip-to-be-cynical phony whose best response is, "I am selfish and I have no issues in admitting that." Not to mention the incredibly strange moment where you reveal arguing with me online has made you feel less sympathy for this elderly woman as she endures all too real physical and emotional abuse.

Re: Merciless bullying of 68-year-old bus monitor
But I'm done. I feel I've made my salient points and have maybe gone too far in other directions.
I feel awful for Karen the bus monitor. I found the video incredibly disturbing, and it reminded me, in its tempo and vocabulary, of abuses I endured in junior high. I'm glad we live in an age where people can come together online and help a fellow human being if they so desire.

Dr. Lecter, the typical German. You did very well, David. ;) David wrote: I'm glad we live in an age where people can come together online and help a fellow human being if they so desire. You see, that is the disturbing part: Giving her money does not solve her problems and, more importantly, does not solve the problem; it merely creates the illusion of having done something to make things right.

Re: Merciless bullying of 68-year-old bus monitor
I know this isn't kosher to say, but giving her money does not solve her problems. It turns out money can buy happiness. It can buy new and exciting directions in life. No, America can't spend its way out of the bullying problem (which has very deep roots, despite it being recently popular and sexy to rail against bullying), but this isn't what people are doing here. They are saying, "This lady was given a horridly raw deal, so let's give her lots of money because, at the end of the day, money can be awesome and fun." Which I feel is a very genuine and legitimate motive, even if it doesn't pass certain tests of earnest "money is not the answer!" cynicism.

So you're saying I should've been dropping references to gulags.
