Yes right, it was an urban outdoor person if you know what I mean.

Everyone starts off as a stranger :D

I'm required to talk to thousands of strangers face to face for work. And I've met some pretty incredible/unforgettable people along the way.

For example when I was in the Western Sahara 2 months ago, a family invited me in for dinner and 3 cups of tea while I was waiting outside for a car repair. Word of mouth spread and over a dozen family/friends/neighbors came over to see the strange visitor.

The family made this massive dinner for me which consisted of this huge communal bowl of rice and random meat. No silverware, just using fingers like shovels. It was like something out of Raiders of the Lost Ark. :funny:

Word. I spent my birthday in Antigua, Guatemala and didn't know anyone but this 37 year-old guy staying at my guest house. I was in Parque Central reading The Lovely Bones (I know, I know) and ended up talking to this gorgeous Danish girl. I showed her the best ruins in the town, and we met up that night to go bar hopping and celebrate my birthday. It was one of the best I've ever had.

Beyond even traveling, I enjoy just saying "How's it going?" or "Great afternoon, huh?" while walking past people on the street. There's no reason to act like just another ant.

Like on a bus, sitting on a bench, in a mall, etc. I'd like to try but I have a weird phobia

What do you guys say to them to start, like... "Hey what's your name?" Or come up with a question and go from there

Someone should read Dr. Leo Marvin's Baby Steps.

People try to talk to me all the time at work. I really don't care what they have to say but I've gotten a pretty good fake laugh down.

The fake laugh is a MUST in the work-place.

I've spent half of my time at work fake laughing at co-workers and customers. I cannot recall a single genuine laugh, other than when people are doing stuff not meant to be funny but obviously is.
