Best ACTRESS

Image

Five performances are nominated for Best Actress. In The Help, Viola Davis delivers a subtle, but stirring performance as an African American domestic maid in the segregated American South. With great care and astonishing emotional dexterity, Davis portrays a strong, but long subjugated woman mustering the courage to stand up for herself and for what is right.

Kristen Wiig and Michelle Williams both portray women in crisis in Bridesmaids and My Week with Marilyn, respectively. Wiig hits effective comic and dramatic notes as Annie, an urbane, neurotic single woman plagued by feelings of depression, loneliness, and jealousy after her long-term best friend becomes engaged. And Williams, with elegance and sensitivity, steps into the role of a legend: Marilyn Monroe. Williams captures the sexy movie-star Marilyn persona as well as the Norma Jean inside, a drug-addicted woman struggling to cope with the severe professional and personal pressures of international cinematic fame.

Rooney Mara, in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Saoirse Ronan, in Hanna, play badass girls with wounded, innocent souls. Both prove tough action roles can also be incredibly poignant. Mara is Lisbeth Salander, a role originated on screen by Noomi Rapace in a Swedish-language trilogy, a girl who committed a violent act of self-defense as a child and since has been forced to deal with the indifference and violence of a life in the system and on the fringe. Many critics and moviegoers declared Mara’s performance, a blend of gothic tough-girl intensity and melancholy longing, superior to Rapace’s. And as Hanna, Ronan delivers a convincing and memorable performance as a teenage girl raised as a warrior in the forest who is discovering the world while also trying to survive its many dangers; she may be the widest eyed assassin ever.

And the award for Best Actress goes to:

WOW that is amazing....so very deserved. I wonder if the absence of Fassbender from Academy's sparked the fuel, though yeah given his overall year this is more than deserved.

I really thought Gosling would get this for a while and, in all honesty, this wouldn't have been very deserved either.

But Fassbender....yes!
