Well, if it's free then how are they to make money off it? And if there's *one* thing that's important in a conservative's life (after their god, of course ) it is to make profit wherever and whenever possible.

It is not "free." Why do liberals want people that never had the opportunity to go to college pay for people to spend more wasted time in school post high school?

The quality of anything goes down when it becomes free. Pretty simple to understand.

We already have free community college - it's called high school.

Going to school for two more years at a higher, yes higher, level will have a more than noticeably effect on our society. More education is NEVER a bad thing.

But yes, elementary/middle/high schools do need some kind of reform.

Community college is cheap, bro. I know you wouldn't know that since your parents paid for you to go to some private school or something, but it's cheap.

Also, it's not like this even matters. Republicans control the houses, so our education system is screwed for the next 2 years anyway, and then Obama will be gone and probably get stuck with some schmuck.

I used to teach at two different community colleges. (Including Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, where they filmed "Good Will Hunting." There, I made this relevant to a movie forum).

More education is NEVER a bad thing. Investing in education pays off tremendously in the long run with better jobs. Other countries that have done this have found it a worthy investment.

They do have an opportunity. Do you really think two additional years teaching a borderline high school graduate remedial math and English (that were required in high school) is worth it?

Why not invest money in teaching people a trade like welding, plumbing, electrician, etc?

Not everyone that doesn't go to college is a "borderline high school graduate".

The value of a college degree has tanked in recent years for many reasons. No idea how Obama thinks making cc free would help that cause.



This is pretty much dead on.

The first blurb I read about this said it would cost upwards of 30 billion dollars. Now, I don't mind providing folks the opportunity to get subsidized college as long as Everyone has the same access to the service. Meaning, those who already have gone to a CC or have a BA or whatever would still get 2 years paid like any other new student.

Second, the value of the degree is really dependent on what you are studying. If you are doing a Nursing degree or some other specialized health science profession then that does have value and if you are capable you will find work. If it's for something generic like a general studies or philosophy then it's probably gonna be just a paper accomplishment or maybe a stepping stone to a BA in something more useful.

Also, why didn't he just propose this when he had both Houses of Congress back when he pushed through the ACA. I hate when politicians trot out something like this and play politics with something that can help folks for the sake of demonizing one Party or trying to take credit for something they clearly could have done when they first got in office.

I am sure othere countries are quivering in their boots about our new free community college program and all the talent we will develop.

"Stupid Liberals, success is for smart people!"

Conservatives: "Hey come on. We can't afford to spend $30 billion on education, even if it would improve our economy and help millions of people. We'd have to raise taxes and otherwise try to find some way to cover that expense and ... what's that? We need $400 billion for war? OK, no problem. Oh, no, don't worry, we don't have to raise taxes for that. We can go deeper into debt, absolutely. For that matter, let's cut taxes while we're doing it. It's only money."

That is a pretty strange interpretation of 'free education'.

It is not free. It is estimated to cost upwards of $70B per year.
