Another door closes. Ray Manzarek dies at 74

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist, producer, and founding member of the Doors, died today from complications related to bile duct cancer. He passed away in a medical facility in Rosenheim, Germany, according to a press release. He was 74.
Manzarek was best known as the Doors' founding keyboardist, forming the band with Jim Morrison in 1965. That organ sound associated strongly with the Doors-- "Light My Fire", "Hello I Love You", "Break on Through", to name a few-- came from Manzarek.
After the Doors, Manzarek went on to record a number of solo records and was a member of Nite City alongside Noah James and Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison. He collaborated with such artists as Iggy Pop, Echo and the Bunnymen, "Weird Al" Yankovic, and X.

They do seem to generate a fair bit of hate among the titans of the era. I admit Jim Morrison's lyrics can be hide-under-the-sofa cringe worthy now and then ("Ghosts crowd the child's fragile eggshell mind"), but I still dig them a lot. And his post-Doors career is very solid, particularly his time with X as a creative guide and producer.
