First of all, regardless of your personal views (his or yours), you take one for the team and join them on the trip to the White House. By not going, you put the spotlight on yourself rather than your team that won the Cup last year.
Second, and I'm strictly connecting imaginary dots here and admit I could be wrong, the whole "I blame both sides" excuse sounds full of shit. I bet if everything was the same but a Republican was in the White House, he would not only go, but would be the type to say "We have to support the President in these hard times!"
