That was actually quite good for Andy. Which says a lot.

It was like that match at the US Open two years ago, two close sets and one relatively easy one. But Andy played well throughout with Roger just being on his game, like he typically is when facing Roddick. Now to hope for Nadal to join him in the final, that would be awesome.

Another Federer/Nadal final, you have to wonder how much the semi has taken out of nadal though... looking good for Fed, i'd say.

Fortunately for Nadal he does have a day to rest and I expect him to recover in time for the final. Where he'll give Roger the trouble he normally gives, but since this is I think the first time they'll be playing each other on Rebound Ace it's hard to gauge what the match will look like. I think Federer can take it in 4.

Serena is owning, and only needs one more game to win the championship

Seriously all you had to do was blink and win the game.

She was funny during the presentation as well. I'm so happy for her.

And again I predicted a Williams sister to win before the start of the tournament. I should have put money on her before the tournament had started.

Serena was more dominating than her win in 2007. This was very impressive. Dinara just was no match for Serena this day. The stat they showed before the matched that popped out was the 40 double faults and she had a few in this match too. Besides, Serena would have been the only one that day to be called #1, not like lately with all these one hit wonders popping up. Hopefully Serena can be consistent and play well at the French. It's so great that she has 10 slams now too. That's amazing. I forgot that Venus has 7 of her own as well.

Serena's win in 07, came against Maria Sharapova who at the time had 2 GS titles and was I believe the number one player in the world. While this was emphatic and impressive, I still believe her victory in 07 was more dominant.

I as well hope Serena will be more consistent in the GS and Venus as well, but I'm not sure that will happen.

I swear to god Jim Courier needs a bullet in the neck. 2 weeks of puttng up with the most shittiest commentary i've ever heard. Encouraging the use of "Rafa" is so fucking annoying.

watching this match, another classic, I'm seeing nadal losing speed as this goes along. I think federer just needs to keep him on the court regardless what happens in this 3rd set tiebbreak. He just needs to outlast him if he can.

Oh gosh, I'm so sick of seeing fed get pulled off court on so many points. Over and over!!!!

Hope Nadal can get this. Would be an incredible feat to beat Federer 2 days after his marathon win over Fernando. Though I get the feeling Federer has this one.

I have to post this before my final comments on the match and awards presentation...

BUD COLLINS STFU U FUCKING NUTJOB

"Roger might not win another major..."

He's still only 27 and the only guy beating him in Majors is Nadal. I'm sorry, but Nadal is not winning the grand slam this year. Federer is at least going to make the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open and he will win one of those. Who's going to beat him at those besides Nadal?

Post subject:  Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09

Okay,

What class displayed by both great champions in that awards presentation. It's certainly tough to come out there right after a big loss and have to speak but Roger just once again shows how much his sport means to him. They both had kind respectful words for eachother and both great champions.

As for that nasty fifth set, I don't know what went wrong for Federer other than Nadal seemingly getting stronger regardless of how long the match was going to go and Fed just spraying unforced errors all over the place certainly didn't help things. He also did appear to lose the "fight" to win near the very end.

Toward the future, Nadal is sitting at 6 majors and is Federer like on Clay...meaning untouchable...so who's gonna ever beat him there anytime soon. Maybe Verdasco? Nadal could also be heading toward 14 and beyond if he keeps winning a non-clay major every year or other year.

Federer will get to 14 and then who knows how many after, but to think that he'd never win another major and be stuck at 13 at 27? Hello...Agassi comes to mind. He's nowhere near done. F'ing Bud Collins.

^^I agree. Bud Collins doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. He's just ignorant and jumps onto bandwagons. IMO Federer should of won. He missed like 5 break points in the third set and was even up 0-40. if he had just gotten one, i'm positive he would of won in 4 sets. Anyways you gotta give Nadal a lot of credit though. The guy is the most mentally tough guy in the game. Federer lost the match not because of fitness or physicality because he is as fit as Nadal, but mentally. Only against Nadal does Roger have all of these upswings and downswings, and it's hard to watch. You know that's how it is because he just destroyed Roddick and Del Potro the last two rounds. If he can just get over that mental hump he'll beat him for sure. But great match all around.

Nadal's definitely in Federer's head right now. But I still think Fed can beat him on grass. Federer was clearly off last year and still matched Nadal at Wimbledon, I think he's in better form now.

Post subject:  Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09

The 3rd and 5th sets made me sad for Federer. Having 0-40 in one game and then 15-40 the next and still not being able to convert any break points is rough. It's not even that he didn't convert it's that he seemed content with just keeping the rally going during this points, and Nadal will beat him every time when he does that.

Federer's serve was also quite pathetic today, and is lucky that he was holding as often as he did.

Nadal is a monster, and is definitely in Federer's head. I think we can give him the French for a few years, and will be one of two people who can win Wimbledon along with Federer. The US Open will probably be his toughest with having the wear and tear of a long season before Flushing Meadows.

On Grass I'm not sure either player has the edge. Definitely give Nadal the mental part, but Federer's serve will be more effective than in other tournaments on grass (assuming he serves well unlike today).

I think the talk of the big four, or even three, was premature. I do believe it's Nadal and Federer, and with each passing match it's becoming just Nadal. He's a good player, no?

Post subject:  Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09

I still think Federer will win more slams.

This year give Nadal the French but Wimbeldon is Feds best chance. And the US Open could go either way. As AgentX implies above Nadal and Federal are the BIG 2 with the others just behind them.

Wasnt it two years ago at the Oz Open when Roger bawled his eyes out? I was surprised he did it again.

I believe that was when Rod Laver was presenting him the trophy that year. Roger, I believe, really idolizes Laver so he was just plain overwhelmed to meet him and the honor of it all.

His emotional speech this year was surprising but not suprising as well. It's alot of emotion you have pent up after just being defeated by the only guy taking majors out of your hands lately and you can't beat him for some reason. Plus, going for the 14th major and the whole setting set up that display.
