When the first trailer for this hit sometime in 2008, the popularity of Heroes, or at least the awareness of that show was still widespread, if declining, and this assumed the reputation of a quick cash-grab. Immediately written off and subjected to the usual colourful banter the Internet produces, my anticipation for this waned and ultimately subsided. I do not recall the critical consensus but, I'm sure it wouldn't have been great, but be not mistaken, for this little Summit-produced flick does have its own strengths and by film's end I was welcome to a sequel, one that will never see the light of day.
It may not be anything new but it is shot with some flair and the combined charm of Dakota Fanning with the usual Chris Evans fun injection served the movie well. One made well make the comparison between this, Jumper and the upcoming I Am Number Four of a story about people with powers, and yes, whilst they have been and may be critically unapproved, they are right up my alley for a fun night-in. A couple of story problems do rear their heads; why are some of these mutants working for Division being the main one, but the most problematic aspect is Camilla Belle, who has shown never seemed to show any enthusiasm and it is no wonder that she does not seem to be cast for any upcoming roles- she even rivals the lifeless performances that the Twilight franchise is plagued with its own female lead Kirsten Stewart.
That aside, it is a solid piece of entertainment and if you like these kind of flicks, by all means, make way for it in your rental queue. As for others, you could do a lot worse than this.
