The new J.J. Abrams project Super 8 was able to intrigue the 575 thousand visitors, and earn $4.31M for its first weekend. Another films also about aliens and without major stars, World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles and District 9 had the similar results: $4.54M and $4.64M, respectively. Mystery, originality, strong advertising, successful trailer exceeded strange name, the action takes place not in our time and the central characters are children.
But Green Lantern was waiting for another fate: the film starts from second place with only $2.46M and, despite the presence of 3D, lost all Superhero comics in recent years. Thus, it was less than a quarter, than the similar Incredible Hulk ($3.22M). The reasons for failure are: unknown comics, unpleasant minor characters on posters, the weak trailer (claimed plot clobbered to the holes, no hint of humor), plus a high level of competition among the blockbusters. Disappointing reviews do not add points to stamina.
215 screens brought comprehensible $0.39M for mediocre horror film The Ward with Amber Heard in the title role, which in most countries, immediately came out on DVD.
The smallest drop in the top ten had a resort comedy All Inclusive, the only Russian film in wide release. In total, it earned more than $5M. The budget is $2M. Kung Fu Panda 2 crossed the mark of $30M. At the moment, cartoon takes 11th place in the list of highest-grossing films.
