This Father's Day Weekend, everything goes green, and no, I don't mean environmentally, I am talking about another Comic Book hero jumping into the Box Office Bandwagon hoping to light up the charts. Ryan Reynolds will light up 3816 screens this weekend with his super powers, if not his acting. Reviews have been negative, which may hurt it from bringing in a broader audience. Polls and interest are very similar to those of the most recent X-men and the Hulk. So per theater wise, I expect the same from this.
Jim Carrey returns as Mr. Popper, dancing with some Penguins in 3338 air conditioned theaters. Mr. Pooper's, I mean Popper's Penguin reviews are not as bad as we expect them to be, but they are not great either. The trailers have been getting good reaction from audiences, so it shows that they want to see it, and Father's Day will help films like these have a Sunday Matinee boost. I see a solid performance from this, giving it a pta in the 6.5k range.
With Father's Day giving the weekend a Sunday Boost, and no more Basketball or Hockey, the Sunday grosses may see some increases from their previous Sundays. Super 8 will take great advantage from this. Normally, this would drop in the high 40% range with competition, but with the Daddy day, it will not. X-men would be dropping more than half with direct competition. Hangover will have a better hold too. Kung Fu Panda has some competition for families and 3D, but Father's Day will make up for it. Bridesmaid will not benefit from this day though, as female films usually suffer on this day, and it starts to lose theaters, making this one of the few non-sophomore films to drop more than it did last weekend. Pirates 4 should avoid a 50% drop again. Midnight in Paris should have a similar drop to Vicky Christina Barcelona. Judy Moody will take a huge dive like many similar films release in the early summer due to competition and Father's Day actually hurting films like these, making it a very Bummer Summer for her. This the Scottie signing out, now time for me to catch from interleague action.
