Gantz Part II: Perfect Answer, starring Ninomiya Kazunari (Arashi) and Matsuyama Kenichi (Death Note), takes first place this weekend.
The sequel opened with 423,675 admissions on 375 screens (35 less than it's predecessor) to gross 551,610,800 yen ($6.75 million). The opening is slightly weaker than Gantz Part I in both admissions and gross, but managed to pull in a higher PSA.
A similar situation happened last weekend with Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence, which debuted on 20 less screens than it's predecessor to open just shy of a franchise record, but also had a higher PSA. Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence has already exceeded the 1 billion yen ($12 million) mark after 9 days in release.
Also breaking the 1 billion yen mark this weekend was OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Riders after four weeks in release.
Easily the biggest surprise this weekend was Hankyu Densha, Nakatani Miki and Toda Erika's latest, telling the story of different persons lives as they commute on the Hankyu Railway's Imazu Line.
The film only opened on 23 screens this weekend, but mobilized some 44,000 admissions to gross an estimated 58 million yen ($705,000), delivering a PSA over $30,000. The nationwide opening day is April 29th, just in time for the Golden Week Holidays.
And rounding out the Top 10 with a lackluster debut, is the adaptation of Miura Shion’s award winning novel, Mahoro Ekimae Tada Benriken. The film debuted on 111 screens with 24,702 admissions for 33,737,580 yen ($415,000).
Golden Week this year begins April 28th and ends on May 5th. The week is one of the best three for the box office, so expect some impressive total increases soon.
