In a rare event , OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Riders tops the Box Office for a second consecutive weekend.

Of course competition was almost non-existant, and all the holdovers have been in release now for at least four weeks, but it's still an impressive feat for a Kamen Rider film with their front-loaded nature.

SP: The Motion Picture - Revolution maintains it's grip on the second place ranking after five weeks in release, while the very leggy, Tangled, moves up one position to finish third this weekend.

Unfortunately for Tangled, any chance of passing up both Let's Go Kamen Riders and SP: The Motion Picture - Revolution next weekend is going to be blocked by one or more openers.

Dropping down to fourth this weekend is Doraemon: Nobita and the Steel Troops - The New Age.   But to cheer the robotic cat up is the fact that his latest has exceeded the 2 million admission milestone, which should bring it's 37 day total to 2.2 billion yen ($26 million).

Not much else going on in the Rankings this weekend with families still going to see Precure All Stars and Narnia, with The Tourist and The King's Speech holding onto their older audiences.

However,  The Rite attracted some 50,183 admissions for a weekend gross of 64.5 million yen ($765,000) to rank sixth.

Next week sees the annual openings of the 15th Anniversary Film for the Detective Conan franchise, Detective Conan: 15 Minutes of Silence, and Crayon Shin-chan: The Golden Spy Mission on the 16th.

Hollywood is offering up Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels, and the recent disappointment, Sucker Punch, on the 15th.

It's going to be interesting to see how the current family/kid releases that have had superb holds or increases for a month now fair with some intense competition, and potential 3D screen loss in a couple cases.

JP have you seen a net decrease in theatre attendance since the quake hit? I figured that would be the trend, at least temporarily, but was curious if this is actually the case. Pretty impressive for Tangled to show upward momentum in its fifth week of release.

How big of a decrease is theater attendance in Japan having anyway?

About 40% of theaters closed the weekend of the quake, but they've actually opened rather quickly since then. I'd guess it's over 80% again based on screen counts being pretty much back to normal.

And honestly, besides the one week, the earthquake didn't really hurt the box office all that much.

In fact, the films in release are going to end up grossing what most expected (moreso for a few, even) before the earthquake.

Strange. I expected that the tsunami impact will be bigger and more long term... But better for the BO!

Eh, in times like these, there's a lot to be said for escaping reality for a few hours.

True but there have been other earthquakes and I assumed people will be weary of being inside large complexes in case another biggie hits...

Especially with the presumed amount of infrastructure damage, but definitely shows the resilience of modern society, and the entertainment industry in particular.

Though I guess if I had to die, it might as well be while watching a movie... :|

If i couldn't ride a nuclear warhead down from a plane, or watch the moon crash into the earth, then i guess dying in a movie theatre would be cool with me.
