Javier Bardem wants 'Dark Tower'

MTV News is reporting that Javier Bardem wants to play the role of Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger, in the upcoming Dark Tower franchise.

"He's locked in psychologically," Brian Grazer told MTV, "He really wants to do it, so we're absolutely rooting for him to do it."

Bardem is also in talks to join Sam Mendes James Bond film, so how this all plays out is still somewhat up in the air. The film itself will be directed by Ron Howard and is meant to be a trilogy, followed by a TV series starring the same cast.

The Dark Tower has a tentative release date of May 17, 2013.

I'm Ron Burgundy. You stay classy, WoKJ.

Bardem would be an amazing choice. He can blend actorly sensitivity and ice-cold badass-ery very well. He elevates pretty much any project he's in, I think.

I am still a little nervous about Ron Howard as director, though I certainly enjoy some of his films, like Cinderella Man. I think someone like John Hillcoat or David Cronenberg could've -really- knocked this out of the park, guaranteed. Though I guess this kind of tricky, expensive material is naturally going to be given to a reliable, tested craftsman like Howard, not someone "weird" or relatively new.

Awesome news, and yeah I agree totally that Bardem would nail this role; guy just has a menacing presence when he wants to. Is this where your name comes from Gunslinger? And yeah Cronenberg would have been the shit for this project, but agree that they would naturally target a mainstreamer for this big-budget production. Studios can't have another box office flop like Fight Club now can they?
